Site Planning & Strategy:
Autism Spectrum Web Portal

This portal is designed to serve as the primary point of entry for resources and treatment information about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Washington state. This preliminary content strategy and site architecture was created in partnership with University of Washington, Seattle Children's Autism Center, and UW Autism Center.

My role: Product Manager and Content/Design Development

The Challenge

How might we create an online treatment and community resource hub for individuals and families impacted by autism?
Living with autism can be challenging. For many parents with autistic children, the process of getting a diagnosis and securing treatment is both daunting and exhausting. In the Seattle area, there is currently no centralized source of information, which adds stress to an already stressful situation. This project provides the content strategy and preliminary designs for a centralized web portal about autism resources in Washington.

The project began with thorough user research interviews with parents of children with ASD, autistic adults, and local medical experts. We wanted every stakeholder to have input on this initiative.

Key Insights from User Research

  • It’s difficult to navigate Autism Spectrum Disorder—there are lots of resources but no guidance for the process
  • Need for a roadmap that is easy to understand, in languages other than English
  • People feel relieved when they are a part of a community. A safe and central place to discuss life with autism would be welcome.
  • It’s important to find support for any individual who is impacted by autism (siblings, parents, etc)
  • A desire to increase understanding of autism through advocacy and education
  • Self-advocacy is important to autistic individuals
Empathy Map
This empathy map explores the viewpoint of a parent with a child who has just been evaluated for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Additionally, there are notes with plans for research tactics and potential features to include in the web portal.
